Player Style File: Signature Licks
Hey speed freaks. As promised, here is a rather egotistical journey into the playing of… uhh… myself. This is largely in response to a load of emails quizzing me on my technique and approach, so here is the solo section from a jazz-metal-shred-funk thingamajig called ‘My Brains Are Shit’, which I wrote a while ago. It displays a nice variety of the techniques I use, and contains perhaps the most technical material I’ve covered in my cols. When trying to play this one, focus on playing as fast as possible while retaining a uniform speed – this is essential to the sweeping bit, but the 6-fingered tapping is insanely quick and will require a bit of practice. Anyone familiar with my playing on mp3.com will have heard this type of speed-lick… lots. Note that the ‘fingering’ notation below the tab follows the fingers oif your *tapping hand*, not your fretting one. Lastly, check out the mad wholetone scale ascent near the end, followed by the cliché bluesy ending with 8-finger tapping descent. All in all, quite ‘me’, for good or bad… I might post the song on mp3.com soon, but in the mean time, play around with some of the licks and the bits that tickle your fancy.
