Pain, Pain, Pain….. pt. 1

Hey dudes, I’m back. After months of limbo, I’ve decided to hurt you again with a series of technical columns that might open your eyes to new approaches to your lead soloing… but of course, as long time fans of IG may know, I’m not exactly going to make it easy for you. This month, I’m looking at wide interval licks in the relative styles of players such as Shawn Lane, Dimebag Darrel, Allan Holdsworth and Buckethead. These licks are not really intended to be ‘musical’ or melodic as such, but are great for looping and playing as flashy outro licks… and if nothing more, they’re a great work out! A cautionary word of warning, though – as with all playing, one should begin by stretching and warming up your hand muscles. This stands especially the case with this month, so be careful and don’t overdo it, some of these examples take a while to nail down, so don’t push yourself too far too quickly. Take care and I will see you again next month for some 8-finger tapping.

Best wishes,
~d

Example I
Starting simple, here’s a classic Dimebag Darrel lick that litters most of his playing – one of my favorite examples is from the solo in ‘Cowboys From Hell’. I’ve also seen Michael Angelo perform the second lick on his instructional video at breakneck speed. Pentatonics are a good start to wide-interval licks, and mixed with legato, can sound very cool and fluid. Note the symmetry – while a lot of these wide-interval licks are not, technically, diatonically correct, they are often played in such way to facilitate speed and ease of maneuverability around the fret board.

Example II
Lets try something else. Here’s a whole neck lick I came up with the other day, quite Buckethead – play it at warp speed for some incredibly weird-yet-flashy results. Simply use your index and pinky fingers for the whole lick, pulling off and sliding down a tone each time. The second is an Allan Holdsworth style slide\picking thing, similar to a phrase he uses in the ‘City Nights’ solo, one of my favorite Holdsworth pieces. Again, use just your index and pinky, making good use of that stretching ability.

Example III
OK kids, that wasn’t bad now was it? Lets step things up a bit. Well, all right… a lot. The diminished is one of my favorite scales so here’s a tasty diminished run a la Shawn Lane. This lick is incredible when up to speed, and is very much a ‘signature’ Lane lick – check out his live outro solo on his cover of ‘All Along The Watchtower’. Watch out for the string skips. The second lick is an augmented lick I made up, in a ‘Lane’ vibe. The stretches are absolutely killer, so be careful!

Example IV
Lastly, as a preview of what’s to come next month, here’s a couple of ideas for you tappers out there. The examples are straight forward enough, utilizing the index and pinky fingers of each hand for those wide intervals – the first is in E major, second in G minor pentatonic with some beastie stretches. Enjoy, and I’ll see you again next month for some more wide tapping ideas.
